Happy 40th, Earth Day

Today commemorates the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day. The internet is brimming with tens of thousands of articles and blog posts delving into almost every conceivable nook and cranny of what Earth Day means and what you and I can do to make a difference. For those of us who work at Goinggreentoday.com, every day is Earth Day. We don’t say that to sound coy or smug, in fact constantly being immersed in these issues can be difficult, trying, and sometimes saddening. Anyone who is passionate about the environment cannot help but feel discouraged at timesĀ by the near constant influx of unfortunate news about the state of the natural world and the direction our species is taking it. Fortunately, we at Going Green Today are also in the solutions business. We know that as stark as it can seem at times, we — humanity — have the collective power to dramatically affect the environment for the better without first having to reinvent civilization or renounce electricity. There is hope and it isn’t an abstract glimmer in the distant future. Today, however, let’s forget all the technical decor, the science and the solutions, and instead contemplate the natural world that moves us to care.
A good portion of the GGT staff is based in Colorado. It’s often beautiful here, but spring is a particularly magical time. Last Monday evening, the departing sun conspired with mountains and cloud, putting on a dance of light and shadow that left those of us who witnessed it in awed silence (we also snapped a few pics). Moments like these, more than any single idea or fact, reminds us why we are so driven to do what we can.
